Selecting the right architect for your project is a crucial decision that can significantly impact the outcome of both the design and construction phase. Understanding your needs, researching potential candidates, and evaluating their expertise are essential steps in finding the perfect match for your vision.
1. Self assess your needs and goals
Setting out a clear Project Brief is crucial to ensure your chosen Architect produces a design which meets your requirements.
Your requirements may be simple at such an early stage, perhaps no more than a few words describing the purpose of the building, target size and number of floors etc. However, you should also set out a construction budget for the architect to work to and your architectural aspirations. Simple, or lots of architectural flair?
2. Research and shortlist 3 to 5 potential Architects
Referrals from trusted individuals and businesses may quickly lead you to a shortlist, however you should do your own research too. Does the person referring to you have vast experience with Architects from which you can seek comfort in their referral alone? Is your project akin to the project the referee experienced? If not, research the Architect further.
Otherwise, a straightforward search for Architects in your area is a good start. You can also search the Royal Institute of British Architects Website Peruse their websites, social media profile and LinkedIn.
You should consider the Architects; familiarity with the location of your project, their company size by comparison to the complexity of your project, their experience in projects of a similar nature and their business culture.
3. Invite the Architects to express their interest in your project
Formally known as an Expression of Interest in procurement. Invite the Architects to express their desire to be considered for your project. This is a great opportunity to refine the assumptions you have made about the shortlisted Architects by inviting them to submit case studies of previous work to you for review.
Your Expression of Interest invitation should ask if they are interested in being invited to submit a fee proposal, whether they have the capacity to take on your project and for 2 or 3 case studies on their past projects of a similar nature.
4. Refine your Shortlist and invite 3 or 4 Architects to submit a fee proposal
From the Expression of Interest, narrow your shortlist down to a formal tender list of 3 or 4 Architects.
At this stage it is crucial to ensure you articulate your Project Goals and Objectives clearly. It will be upon that Project Brief which your Architect Appointment will be based.
Give each Architect the same details and consider interviewing them individually after you have received the fee proposals.
5. Finalise your decision and appoint
It’s decision time, compare proposals from different architects. Look beyond the numbers and consider factors like design aesthetic, communication style, and how well they understand your vision. Choose the architect who feels comfortable to work with and shows great knowledge and understanding of your needs.
